The Puji Hospital in Dongguan, 1888-1949: The Interaction and Acculturation Processes between Rhenish Missionary Doctors and the Local Society
The project explores the transmission of scientific medical knowledge from Germany to China from around 1890 to 1949. In particular, the research focuses on Puji Hospital 普济医院 – the first German missionary hospital in China – established by the Rhenish Mission (Rheinische Mission) in Dongguan 东莞, Guangdong 广东. The goal of the research is to show how European and traditional Chinese medical knowledge were perceived, transmitted or rejected in the hospital, and how Rhenish medical missionaries connected with the local society in Dongguan and beyond concerning medical affairs.
